I'm reading a book written in 2023. There's a piece about "USA, the world's oldest democracy" being overtaken by China as the largest economy, "another stress test that will show whether the US stands strong with democracy and holds to its humanistic values or whether it falls for the appeal of a capitalist autocracy"

@ronanmcd I'm wondering whether Greece might like to take issue over that "world's oldest democracy" thing? Ok, ancient Greece may not have been a democracy as we know it but neither was the USA for a long time - some would question whether it is yet.

@capnthommo makes me think of Biden this week saying that the US is heading towards oligarchy. I'm sitting there thinking, has he not seen all of US history?
