@n8gnj Hello Steve, just discovered Zero Retries, thanks for publishing it! I’d be very interested in the archive of packet radio material - I’m revisiting packet after last real use in the mid-90s, following OARC’s efforts to rebuild the UK packet network, and reading a few of TAPR’s PSR. Hoping to develop a Raspberry Pi Pico-based TNC/sound card this year. 73 de M0CUV

@M0CUV Hi Matt - I’m not aware of a Raspberry Pi Pico based TNC. I think that would be a welcome new implementation given the very rich hardware capabilities of the Pico. I suggest looking at the NinoTNC for inspiration - https://tarpn.net/t/nino-tnc/nino-tnc.html. In particular, the IL2P FEC is worth implementing as it makes 9600 bps FSK actually usable.

@n8gnj Hi Steve, no I couldn’t find one - so have started one. Very early days - planning to make a USB sound card with USB serial ports, to later support KISS (like the Mobilinkd TNC) and possibly full TNC. I’ve been looking at the NinoTNC, and will probably build one in the near future.

@M0CUV Ah, audio interface is much easier. Then you should look to the Masters Communications DRA products for inspiration - https://masterscommunications.com/products/radio-adapter/dra/dra-index.html. They are the best, highest performance audio adapters I’m aware of. They do FULL audio spectrum when connected to a radio with flat audio. Then you can use Dire Wolf to do all the packet radio heavy lifting. Or VARA FM or VARA HF.

Detail for clarity re “Imagining an HF Appliance Based on the zBitx”: architecturally, the zBitX is already its own appliance. (I reckon Steve @n8gnj knows: he concentrated on adapting its hardware to a new environment.)

The zBitX UI is web based, and important signal and control plumbing can also be TCP/IP. Some work on configuration will be required to expose it, but not too much.

Farhan VU2ESE described the stack at FDIM 2024, half an hour into his presentation: https://youtu.be/2MeFZb9Dxbg?t=31m10s

@vk2tty You’re correct - all the software and networking hooks for remote operation is all in there. My interest in a variant was mostly a better hardware arrangement for fixed remote operation.
