@vinnie My heart immediately wants to say emergent outcomes because it's fascinating to tempt fate, but if I am honest with myself, predetermined outcomes are almost always better.
Emergent outcomes always depend on a limited number and quality of variables. It's kind of like radiant quests; the idea sounds great, but in practice they end up less varied than hand-crafted limited results.

@lianna that's kinda how I feel. Bioshock, for example, is a game I love but sometimes when I played it I felt as if I was at a playground where the toys were the systems. It was not quite in tune with the mature narrative it proposed.

@vinnie hard to say.... a good story like in an rpg is of course great.... but.. if i had to imagine that there was an rpg with an emergent outcome it would blow my mind ..
but with todays possibilities i think it always depends... both have pros and cons
staged outcomes can reach incredible depths that emergent once very very rarely do....

@DominikDammer yeah! I feel the emergence we have today is extremely limited. But it is exciting to imagine which boundaries of emergency will be overcome in a near future.

@vinnie
Third option: it doesn't matter so long as I don't find out in the moment ;)

@vinnie rpg's have this - doesn't matter if it's a railroad adventure or not. Just has to appear like there's choice.

@DarkestKale for sure! At the end of the day what counts is the illusion of emergence, of variation, of surprise, of reactivity and - maybe most importantly, of agency.

@vinnie I think this poll proposes a false dichotomy. It doesn’t matter which of the two as long as the user came tell his the outcome was arrived at.

@sdether makes sense, the design decisions are likely to be transparent to the user at the end of the day.
