I just watched an hour-long talk about elliptic curve crypto and I still have no fucking clue what the hell an elliptic curve actually is. :thonking:

@phryk - I don't think they do either. It's not a real thing. 😂

@tinker Yeah, honestly this is kind of why I always stayed with RSA.
Every time I try understanding elliptic curve crypto, everything just screams "snakeoil nonsense" at me.
And IMO this is a huge communication problem the crypto scene has.

@tinker
It also doesn't help that math people are ideologically opposed to having descriptive variable names, which makes following the math even more impossible, because you immdeitaly have to juggle 4 extra things in your head (what variable is which keypair component).
With an average brain being able to handle about 7 pieces of info in parallel, this elitist bullshit alone takes up more than half the cognitive capacity of anyone trying to figure this shit out.

@phryk - Honestly my gut just goes to "it's opaque for a reason. The NSA intentionally fucked with crypto in the past but was caught. Now they do it by hiding it in the miasma of bullshit "modern" crypto standards".
It's bordering on a conspiracy theory, but there's historical precedent so I dont feel too tin foil hat on it.

@tinker I'm not so sure, if that was the case I'm pretty sure many cryptographers would ring some big-ass alarm bells.
But I definitely get where you're coming from.
