Getting older is the act of watching all your childhood idols slowly die as you become someone else's childhood idol

@spacekookie yes to the first, no the second if I can help it...

@wmd To be honest I think it's a natural process. When you're good at something, someone is going to look up to you for inspiration.
And I think that's not a bad thing per say.
But we have to be aware of this happening because it's easy to let this go to your head and it might turn you into a shitty person

@spacekookie hmm, I see a difference between an idol and someone who provides inspiration. The latter can also be a muse. I'm happy to be an inspiration, but also we think we should all kill our idols. The idol in ones head, tends to become more than what it is.

@wmd yeah that is fair. maybe the word is a bit tainted with excessive idealisation and parasocial relationships. That's not how I tend to think about the word, but I've also actively tried "killing my idols" for the last 10 years. I still get sad when people I looked up to and who inspired me die. But I guess it's a bit different than how most people see their "idols"

@spacekookie @wmd interesting discussion. as an aside, are you thinking of some idols in partic? like programmer types/things related to work or more like life idols? i agree isn't not really idol-ness necessarily, but also there is in most cases a form of projection involved in even more non-idolizing relationships...

@mousebot @wmd this toot was triggered my David Lynch dying this week (who... I sort of indirectly looked up to as a film maker, even though I hadn't seen all that many things by him, I know a lot of indie film makers who were inspired by him and I very much enjoyed their work. So it's a kind of "aw" via proxy).
Two other people who shook me when they died in recent times were Ursula K. Le Guin and Iain Banks (who died on my 20th birthday 😭). There's more from the last few years but I can't recall any of them right now lol.
I think even though I'm a programmer, my idols tend to be artists. Or I guess in more recent times youtubers: I really look up to Angela Collier for example, she just seems like an extremely cool and smart person and she makes me want to learn more about the things she teaches. Or someone like Benn Jordan who inspires me when it comes to field recordings and making music in unconventional ways.
I guess ultimately... just people who inspire me to think outside the box, to expand my horizons of thinking, to learn to see the world through different eyes, etc. Does that make sense? 😅

@spacekookie @wmd yeah, makes total sense. i have often thought about this in regards to poetry and writing (my main interests). as time goes by, people attain some aura or are appreciated by being great, but also simply by managing to do stuff, gathering experiences and sharing them, by being active over time. and that can get condensed into some idea of genius or similar, but to them it was actually spread out over their life. i think there's a way to see it that is also pretty horizontal or anti-hierarchical, while still fully appreciating the efforts of those we admire. i feel like i admire people all over the place too (different contexts, different artforms, life-forms). then you have to go back to your own activities and mainly try to just allow yourself to get lost in them, do stuff, accumulate or sediment your actions...

@mousebot @wmd yeah!! I think you mention something very important there: to not see your "idols" as "genius" but rather as dedicated, hard working, and to let that dedication and hard work inspire you to be more dedicated and hard working. And to stick with your interests even when it seems like you don't make progress

@spacekookie ah yes, I connect the word closer to its context/origin in religion?
When looking closer to the parasocial relationships, I like to remind myself how little I know them and how unfair it is to them to make them larger than life. But fame is far from what I aspire, I hope people will only/mostly know me in a way that means they can get to know me, me them, for connections to stay real. I do realise fediposting can work against that though...
