Glory be, this is such a great little tool for people with a #synth studio.

@alisynthesis honest question, why is it $200 🥲

@samf yeah that is really crazy in terms of how much the parts cost. If I were just a little handier with electronics I would try to make one myself.

That said, I have imagined this product so many times, and it's great to see someone actually build it.

@samf I mean, for God's sake, for $100 more you can get this absolutely sweet little mixer. https://zoomcorp.com/en/us/digital-mixer-multi-track-recorders/digital-mixer-recorder/livetrak-l6-final/

Half the channels, but so much more functionality.

Heritage audio is like that though. Their little passive monitor switchers are crazy expensive too. They are a lot nicer than the cheaper ones though.

@alisynthesis I'm a little surprised it took this long! To make one with that many selectors, at least.

I'm like a…2/10 when it comes to electronics knowledge, but for a passive mixer I think it's literally just wiring the jacks together with the switch physically connecting input -> output. It's not a summing box or mixer.

I don't want to be a penny pincher, but this SCREAMS “boutique pricing". A 1/4” mono jack is like 50 cents retail, before any sort of bulk pricing. 🧐

@samf I'm with you. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and try to make one. It would be a good experience, whether or not it came out usable.

@alisynthesis The thing is, for me, that I would only be able to hear one synth at a time.

I must hear them all at once. I also enjoy separate inputs for isolation. Cool, but too limited.

@Scatterfilter I hear you. I was thinking of it as a way to extend my 32-channel mixer. I probably have too many synths.

@Scatterfilter @alisynthesis you can never have too many mixer inputs. Buy a larger mixer, you will still run out! It is one of laws of the universe. Like disk space. As soon as you free it, it'll get filled.

@Scatterfilter @alisynthesis my "solution" is to use patch bays. For ex. for my #modular #synth setup, I have a snake that goes from my mixer inputs to the bottom row back section of the patch bay. I then run two jacks from my patchulator to back top row on patch bay to allow for arbitrary signal paths to be sent to channel 1 and 2. I can still override that by patching a synth directly in the front bottom row of the patch bay. I similarly plug the other channels to other synths. Quite flexible

@f_dion @Scatterfilter yep, I'm a 3 patchbay studio myself. Can't live without em! (Okay, maybe I could, but would life really be worth living? 😂)

@alisynthesis @Scatterfilter and still running out of inputs? You must have a bunch of rack mount modules with individual outputs. My Kawai K5m has 6 outputs I think, same with the Roland D110. That's half a patch bay right there. kawai xd5 adds another 6 plus a stereo out. So on and so forth. That adds up quickly. And drum machines with individual outs too. I have one snake dedicated just to my drumulator

@f_dion @Scatterfilter yep, that's exactly right. I have all my mixer inputs and outputs hooked up (well, 24 of them), with synths normalled to them. That takes up two 48 point patch bays. Then in the third patch bay all of my outboard gear is hooked up in a thru state, so I can patch anything to anything.

@f_dion @Scatterfilter (my mixer is 32 channels, but only 24 of them have direct outputs, which means I really only use 24. And that's only 12 synths!! That is not very many synths!!)

@f_dion @Scatterfilter I wish I could use all my drum machines and samplers individual outs, but that would be getting absolutely ridiculous. I just patch them when I'm recording something where it's necessary, like if I need a separate kick, but mostly I just record the whole beat as one stereo track.

@alisynthesis @Scatterfilter I heavily process each drum machine channel with different effects. I use a rackmount 1u mixer to take all the individual outputs and recombine them to a stereo signal, post processing, as my analog gear mixer is only 16 channel (a vintage Boss BX16 I've been using for a few decades now - wasn't vintage when I started using it, LOL!)

@alisynthesis @Scatterfilter definitely could see that. Stereo everything uses a lot of mixer real estate. Most everything is mono in my case, which I then pan (except the behringer 305 module output which is itself a stereo mixer amongst other things)

For the modular synth setup, I record to either multitrack analog or digital so no need for mixer channel individual outputs since the console is the final recording destination.

@Scatterfilter @alisynthesis most of the time, the default works, but if I want to swap permanently, say, the Cat with the Kobol, then I just take the Cat out and put the Kobol in, but if it is temporary, then I Jack the Kobol output to the front bottom row jack corresponding to the channel I had the Cat on, I try to stick to the color coding of cables to make it slightly easier on my brain (green cable on the Cat is also using green on the snake, so mixer input cable color matches)
