@Havant_Enviro GWR have an experimental battery set train running. It does seem obvious.
One of the nice bits is that you can electrify the stretches easiest to watch and hardest to steal the cables from, and not electrify the insecure parts. And nothing stops you having a generator unit on a set, if you still have a gap.
