So I'm now looking to move from Proton. I'm going to try TutaMail (Tutanota) again. Last time I tried them, my account never got activated, which was a bummer, but heyho.
If it works this time, I'll try and transfer across. I've emailed proton asking for a refund. I'm not having my money going to Donald Fart's pockets.

Tuta have an issue with just deleting your account with no warning because they deem it spam.
I know someone who personally had this happen. And it took like 2 months for them to get a reply from tuta. So be careful, because if you have important stuff in there, it could go bye bye and you'll be stuck for gods knows how long waiting for a reply.

Yes, I've heard that too, and my first experience didn't fill me with confidence, but we'll see. The other alternative is disroot.org, which is encrypted and free. So tedious to be conscientious rather than just using something like Google/outlook etc.

@DodoTheDev I've been thinking that a Fastmail+LastPass (I'd need a cloud storage service that isn't scum) combo might replace a lot of functionality which I currently enjoy on Proton...I have to look into both services to see if they have a history of supporting shitty people first.
While Proton the company will have to remain neutral based on neutrality laws in their country of origin, it doesn't stop their CEO from getting personally involved with Trump...That certainly sickens me as a Proton user.
I hope that your move works, as I have heard bad shit about Tuta, like @VulpineDruid mentioned to you, which is why I won't be looking into them, personally!

One of the reasons Proton was my second choice was because I didn't need all the other stuff the offer. I have Next cloud for cloud storage (kinda), I use Bitwarden for passwords, Tailscale for VPN, it's mainly Mail, calendar and Contacts I need. But because Tuta didn't even dain to give me access, I gave up. We'll see how they do this time, and take it from there.
Like I said, I also have my sights on Disroot.org
