I really don't like the Signal vs Matrix discourse from people. :neodog_what: It reminds me a lot of the BlueSky vs Mastodon discourse. Either option is a better option than Discord/Telegram the same way either BlueSky/Mastodon are better than Twitter.
I prefer Matrix the same way I prefer Mastodon for its decentralization. I think it's easier to attack and bring down something when it's centralized, either through private equity enshittification, regulation, or hacking. That said, I'm glad people are on BlueSky and I just prefer to bridge the two specifications as much as possible. Same thing with Matrix vs Signal. I think the Matrix spec is immature and has some missing functionality, but I like how the decentralized structure makes it more difficult to take down. Meanwhile I'm happy people use Signal, and I simply opt to bridge the spec to my Matrix server so we can communicate securely.
And yes, I see you encrypted XMPP people over there. I haven't played with XMPP much so I dunno how much I can speak to it, but you are valid. :blobfoxfloofhappy:

@Rusty I'm waiting until Matrix can hit core feature-parity with Discord as that's my primary use case. My understanding was Signal was more like telegram and Matrix more like Discord - which fill two different niches imo so not really comparable.
I agree with you either ways though. Just waiting for matrix to mature better. Decentralization will win the popular vote in the end - its just gonna take a lot of beatings before the public understands and turns that way - that and a lot of innovation on the decentralization platforms as they just aren't there yet imo.

@notsobigkid I don't think I see Telegram and Discord as that distinct from each other anymore. Telegram has been slowly inching into Discord's turf with chat folders, calling, and group chats with different categories for discussion. I think Signal is a lot more analogous to WhatsApp/RCS/SMS clients, which Telegram used to be a lot more akin to back in the day.
I dunno, I see Matrix filling the niche of both Telegram and Discord, which is another reason I'm not enamored with Signal since it feels really barebones by comparison.

@Rusty I haven't tried Signal due to requiring a phone as Telegram and not having a strong use for IM. I am on Telegram mostly for the group chats / channels. And for private IMs, I use encrypted XMPP. Matrix looks interesting but I'm not sure it is solving a problem for me for now.

@Rusty remember that matrix keeps beaming obnoxious amounts of metadata back to the central servers and it's not exactly backed by the purest of people (they sure want you to buy an element license despite the fact their efforts should being placed on synapse/dendrite development). But... it's better to have options.

@ZanaGB As far as I know Synapse doesn't send any data back to the central servers unless you use matrix.org as your directory or keyserver. And also I didn't even know Element licenses were a thing, so I'm not sure how much they're really pushing it. The bulk of their work in the last few years has been on sliding sync and the new Element X client so decrypting your chats doesn't melt your phone anymore. There is a metadata issue with the group chats where server admins have more access to user metadata than they should, but that's all I'm aware of.
