I work in research computing department at a large university. That is, using large computing resources for research, not researching computing. Of course the university is a violently capitalist and hierarchical entity but I used to be able to feel at least somewhat good that my work was contributing to knowledge production and dissemination.

The ITS homepage is all AI. The department I work within has become an extension of the marketing arm of Microsoft and OpenAI and it makes me literally nauseous.
This is in addition to the fact that MS has completely colonized our infrastructure. Outlook, Teams, everything runs on MS hypervisors, our entire security apparatus sits on active directory. Needless to say, it's all terrible.

I can't quit, there's nowhere to go and the job still has important perks including a good life/work balance. But I feel dirty and angry whenever I engage with work now and I hate it.
Maybe, just maybe, after this bubble implodes and the people responsible for these institutional decisions are sent off with their golden parachutes, we can make some better choices.
