et tu, rsync?

heads up if you're running rsync in daemon mode on an untrusted network

@dotjayne Wat? I just came over to your profile to learn why you had given yourself a blue smoke moniker but now you're wing stabbed by rsync too?? I have had awful tech luck in the last month and a half so maybe it's catching.

@codeofamor lol, I should probably edit the post to be a bit more clear, just a sec

(blue smoke moniker came from a semi recent adventure in accidentally reversing the polarity that did not end up as well as star trek would make you believe)

@dotjayne Reversing polarity is never a good time unless you did it as a result of noticing a massive voltage drop while running via current limiters. Turning up the current is very rarely the answer. 😬 I have found...

@dotjayne Ah. Happy to be safe behind using rsync via SSH. As much as I like the idea of running rsync in daemon mode, in the past it has never been as stable that way, so running on demand via SSH became my standard method. And honestly, I can't think of a use case where the former would be better!

@codeofamor yeah, ssh mode all the way for me, mainly because the one-time effort of setting it up as a daemon isn't worth the reduced overhead on the receiver, even on my SBC microservers.

laziness ftw :blobfoxthinksmart:

@dotjayne It's not laziness! It's successful optimisation in effort reduction!
