ESA sent the commands to wrap up the Gaia mission's science operations after more than 10 years scanning two billion stars in the Milky Way. The spacecraft's fuel supplies were running low, and it is expected that it can no longer maintain its precise observations. The agency will complete some more technology tests and then move Gaia to its retirement orbit. It will be fully shut down on March 27, 2025, although data releases will still be published for years to come.
