Please put notes about places that welcome LGBT people on OpenStreetMap. Any place that has some sort of visual indication meaning that LGBT people are welcome or that it's meant for them. There aren't nearly enough of these on the map & I know there are more.
You could always search Google Maps for LGBT safe spaces, but the first results you'll get are Olive Garden & Chick-fil-A (Olive Garden isn't bad like Chick-fil-A, they just mark all their restaurants as LGBT inclusive for marketing & SEO). I want a more reliable map than that, where I can find a place I don't have to hide, but OpenStreetMap needs help to make it.

@jackemled
this exists, it needs publicity among those who make updates in osm (myself included). i'm not sure how to get that.

The lgbtq=* tag indicates the level of LGBTQ+-friendliness of a feature.
This tag is typically added to leisure features or amenities, such as shops, bars, nightclubs, gyms, bathrooms, or healthcare facilities.
Information must be verifiable. Only places which openly indicate themselves to be LGBTQ+-friendly should be tagged as such.
Values
lgbtq=primary
Location which caters to a predominantly LGBTQ+ audience, whether by design or overwhelming convention.
lgbtq=welcome
Location which has some verifiable indication that LGBTQ+ people are welcome. Examples of signage may include stickers, flags, posted messages, or statements on the feature's website.
lgbtq=only
This feature is exclusively (not just predominantly) for LGBTQ+ people and does not allow others.
amenity=nightclub + lgbtq=primary + lgbtq:men=only
A nightclub which caters to LGBTQ+ people and only allows men to enter. (Implies lgbtq:women=no)
lgbtq=no
This feature indicates that it does not serve LGBTQ+ people.
This tag is likely to be uncommon in places where this type of discrimination is illegal, but may be added if it is verifiable by survey of a bigoted sign or similar indication.
Subkeys: lesbian, gay, bi/bisexual, trans/transgender, queer, non_binary, women/female/woman, men/male/man, bears/bear, cruising

@tati That's what I'm trying to use, but I just don't know any places I can apply it to. It would help if people would add notes pointing them out!

@jackemled i wonder… if something like the streetcomplete app could prompt for this. it's a surveying tool used by enthusiasts who may not be experts. i'm not sure though, there has to be something more broad-based. go into their forums wherever they are ? this is the current coverage map for the tag

@tati I think StreetComplete Expert Edition has custom quests you can make for yourself. It's also open source so if anyone knows how to program they could implement one into the next version of the app. I'm sure the creator of StreetComplete would love the help with something like that.

@jackemled without what you really want — a renderer to show lgbt-friendly places — this will be hard to maintain actually. because businesses are knuckling under to fascists left and right; many of these signs may come down and there's not a good way to audit them. hmm

@tati QueerMap works fine & if it stops it's easy to query Overpass Turbo for the same information.
