I'm never so happy when I axe code from GDAL. I guess I could remove half of the code base and hardly nobody would ever notice

@EvenRouault Do it! You'll be happy for months š
(but please don't touch the parts I use)

@kbevers The plan is to use ChatGPT to ask it which parts of GDAL aren't used and blindly trust it
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from EvenRouault@mastodon.social
@EvenRouault Solid plan. You can probably even ask it to do the work for you š§

@EvenRouault maybe put it in a gdal-extras lib?

@mdione I don't believe in code cemeteries. Nobody comes flourishing the tombstones

@EvenRouault this right here is true power, buying Twitter and a President? Nothing in comparison
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from fletch@mapstodon.space
@fletch "power" I don't know. It is utterly difficult to make the community accept removing code is needed. It is much easier to contribute new code in comparison.

@EvenRouault GDAL giveth and GDAL taketh away, blessed be GDAL. I think a bit of capriciousness never hurt anyone š

@fletch Letting you the benefit of the doubt about what you meant with capriciousness...

@EvenRouault a random act. Today I delete half of GDAL.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from fletch@mapstodon.space
@fletch ~ 90% of the respondants of our user survey use GeoTIFF as their primary raster formats. Given that we have 172 raster drivers, just deleting half of them would be unnoticed by 95% of users. So that would be a very conservative act. One could blame me for that conservatism actually
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from EvenRouault@mastodon.social
@EvenRouault short messages failing to convey intended meanings. I use GDAL every day, mostly GeoTIFF so I am the user you mention. Still if you deleted 50% I would have zero reason to complain. I would remain grateful for the tools made available to me for free.

@EvenRouault @fletch Alternate view: what if the 95% represent a missed opportunity in documentation/education/usability? Could many of those users be using a better suited format for their data if they only knew about them?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from WeatherGod@fosstodon.org
@WeatherGod @EvenRouault for sharing interoperability is the biggest issue. Better formats are better because they can be opened by most software. Shapefile is not the best but try working with geo package in ESRI or CAD

@fletch @WeatherGod We aren't discussing removing formats that people use. We just ask for users to speak up about what they use: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12yk0p8rRK4rAYO_VwXboatWkiILAjE2Cepu32lsHhM8/edit?gid=0#gid=0

@EvenRouault @WeatherGod I will have a look on a laptop. I expect Iām a vanilla user. And I genuinely love the work you do Even

@EvenRouault @fletch @WeatherGod that's why we love gdal. It works. And we dont need to be ss.afe software to do our jobs (and not just click click next next : gis is a job ). Thanks you.
