@hedders alas it was £200. Battery had stopped holding charge despite only being about a year old. I really really don't want to have the trouble of a diesel when I only drive about 10 - 15 miles a week currently but I don't have any other choice (hence replacing the filter degunker bit before Christmas)

@Retroprincess If it’s any consolation I went and bought a new battery for mine thinking I’d just fit it myself, only to discover that a) I need to dismantle half of what’s under the bonnet to get at the battery compartment and b) Halfords had sold me the wrong size battery anyhow.
