As a little experiment, I've set up an account on Pixelfed to provide Pixelfed-specific tips and support.
➡️ @PixelfedHelp
I don't normally set up platform-specific accounts, but Pixelfed users are only able to see posts with images attached, so it's impossible for them to see most posts on FediTips.
To follow this from your Pixelfed, type this address into the search box on Pixelfed but without any spaces:
@ pixelfedhelp @ pixey.org

@FediTips @PixelfedHelp May I ask where this sudden growth of Pixelfed came from?

@voxel
Because of Zuckerberg's speech where he announced that bigotry, hatred of minorities etc would be allowed onto Meta's platforms.
People on Instagram are looking for alternatives.

"Pixelfed users are only able to see posts with images attached"
Do you know if it's the same for GIFs and mp4 files? Is a mastodon post with one of these file types as an attachment shown to pixelfed users?
Thank you.

@repeatro
Animated GIFs are automatically converted into silent MP4 files by Mastodon.
Yes, as far as I know these will show up as video clip posts in Pixelfed.

@FediTips @repeatro Why does Mastodon do this convertion? Doesn't it use more memory once converted?

@Bigou @FediTips
I assume not.
GIF is an uncompressed file format, causing huge file size in general.
Converting them to mp4 actually should reduce the file size.

@Bigou
There is discussion of why this happens in this thread:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/15471
Apparently mobile apps need this conversion to happen?
