Very weird* how desperate some people are to deny the superior standard of living in much of China these days. Even putting aside questions of ideology/governance, China is an ascendant world power — why wouldn't living standards be on the up?

I'm also seeing a lot of "China is actually incredibly capitalist" and... I mean... have you read any of what their political leaders have to say? Of all the many valid and serious criticisms you can make of the Chinese state, it's definitely run by Marxists, as part of a socialist project. Judge it a failure by all means, but saying "it's capitalist" just because capital exists there is kind of being willfully ignorant imho. You might as well say the US isn't capitalist because there are trade unions there.

And I must admit that I'm kind of talking to my past self a little here. I too considered Dengism a complete abandonment of the socialist project. But the truth is there was never any break rhetorically — which would have been the path of least resistance in a world of US hegemony — and furthermore... it's hard to argue with results, isn't it?
