Ads are bads.

Advertising, and marketing in general, generate costs with little to no societal benefit. They:

• manipulate preferences so we buy things past the value they provide,

• cause us to overproduce, and over consume, things,

• benefit from economies of scale, placing more power in bigger companies and platforms.

"But you wouldn't get the 'free' websites and shows and aps without ads," the reply guys cry. On Mastodon. A place that shows us a better way is possible.

@FantasticalEconomics We've been conditioned for a long time to think primarily or even exclusively about the flow of money in all situations.

The ethics of "that's all good but who's going to pay for it?" has derailed all of civilization basically.
