One of my previous bosses used to say that Research Software Engineers are somewhere between a postdoc and a lecturer.
Often it feels more like being in your first year of your PhD: Desperately trying to learn enough to make progress on a project, or at least not sound stupid in the next meeting.
Sometimes it feels like being a professor who is giving the same lecture for the 100th time.
