It's lately becoming apparent that my resistance (refusal) to get a smartphone is going to be the 21st C equivalent to my 1970 resolution to never buy a car.

@cavyherd I waited until I could run LineageOS. As it is I can't run much "official" stuff that requires the Google spyware layer.

@RogerBW

This is potentially very interesting (& I think somebody else pointed me at something similar, though maybe not at the OS level). My primary question, though, is: would it run apps that for example Albertsons wants me to use to use their Drive-up-&-Go service?

I'm betting not.

@cavyherd It depends on the app. Nothing you have to pay for, for a start. Nothing that relies on Google Play Services (aka Google Services for Mobile and various other names). But some of the programs that claim they do rely on it don't really. My general assumption/experience with a big-company app is that it may well not work.

Ah well. Would be nice, but that would be the only reason I'd take on something like that, would be to deal with these big box corporations. It sounds like it possibly maybe side-steps a lot of the advertising tracking. But in addition to data privacy, my objection to smartphones is also an equity issue.

(I don't actually know what Google Play Services are, or what they do. This is an ignorance I hope to maintain.)

@cavyherd Understood, and I'm not saying you're wrong. The killer app for me was Termux, which lets me have a Linux command-line prompt and programs, particularly bog-standard ssh; I'm not suggesting that this should apply to everyone!

Okay, now THAT piques my interest. I can't imagine trying to do command line on a phone keyboard, but I'm a (low-level*) UNIX geek from way back.

@cavyherd "Hacker's Keyboard" is tiny but has all those characters that normal phone keyboards don't offer (like tab and cursor up). I also bought a folding Bluetooth keyboard but don't use it as often as I'd expected to. Much of my computing life (home and work) is spent on the command line with ssh.

For apps, F-Droid has a bunch of good stuff, including Aurora Store which is a back door into the Google App store without requiring a Google account.

It's nice to know there are alternatives! I hope this space expands in coming years, especially if it undercuts the growing enshittification of the 'Net generally.
