I've started thinking differently about the diaspora from Failbook and Twitter.
Sure, lots are fleeing to Bluesky, which at least for this very picosecond seems a better option.
But LOTS are also fleeing elsewhere, and lots more are simply turning off social media.
And this is, I think, all for the good.
Every tiny thread we can pry away from the Gordian knot that is profit and virality seeking algorithmic social media, the better off we'll be as a society.
The internet is only beautiful in the small. I think the Fediverse and its anti-virality by design is an excellent example of that.

@feoh My problem with the Fediverse is that the people running "major" instances are mostly assholes.

@mos_8502 Why does that matter?
@dashie the admin of oldbytes.space is positively awesome and that's all I need to worry about as an end user :)
When you run your own instance you take on a whole new world of politics and potential worry. It's a tall order.

@feoh
It's that second group that worry me. Historically that group that simply turns off social media, tends to go right back to the abusive lover after this fecal vortex stops. In a few weeks / months after things calm down a bit, they will be right back to Xhitter and Failbook. And because their are back, the news and media services will go back because "That's where everyone is at"

@feoh I donno if the fedi is anti-viral unless you mean that in a non social media sense. my personal server has posts boosted quite often.

@JoYo It is my understanding that the design of Fedi and the ActivityPub protocol was meant to dampen virality.

@feoh
I worry about anything becoming the new Twitter, including fedi.
We do not need another globally scoped social media platform that everyone jumps on board. We need a healthy ecosystem with an abundance of different communities experience the world in their own ways and contexts.
Fedi is not for everyone. Bluesky is not for everyone. I don't think there should exist any one site that is for everyone. And I try to remind myself of that when I bitch about Bluesky.
As long as it doesn't suck all the air out of the room like the silos before it did... it can exist. I guess.

@lordbowlich @feoh you mean there's more than one website?

@JoYo @feoh
I know, truly a wonderful time to be alive. There's like dozens, at least.
