Hello, anyone who works for @Vivaldi gonna be at #FOSDEM?

I wanted to speak to someone to try to understand how hard doing this would be with Vivaldi, because I have an idea how difficult it was to do with Firefox, and I'm using it more and more for personal browsing.

@mrchrisadams @Vivaldi Is it ethical or a good idea to do this? It keeps playing into a narrative individualizing climate change as opposed to making political, large scale change happen.

Personal use of energy is fairly minor compared to industrial use.

Framing climate change as a "zero sum energy use" issue is not a very good model. We do have the technology to produce enough energy for sensible (even unsensible) uses sustainably.

Making it happen on a political level is the hard part.

@kora@chaos.social @mrchrisadams@mastodon.social @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net From a cursory look, I don’t think this is the case here: This is part of the developer tools, meaning that this doesn’t target end-users but attempts to give a tool to developers (aka the industry-side of things), which would be a good thing and would potentially affect A LOT of people and might does produce some actually meaningful savings…

@Fiona @Vivaldi @mrchrisadams OK, I concede that this is an excellent point. I still don't like the idea of CO2 footprints – even for websites and I think it can have a negative impact to engage in this mode of thinking. Excess is excessive and true excess can be smelled from miles away; but I do not have any good model of how this would be used by big corps – where it would truly matter.

It might be a good idea, I do not know. And I do apologize for skimming overly hard.

@Fiona @Vivaldi @mrchrisadams I do stand by the point that these sorts of interventions might have a rebound effect outweighing the benefit of the intervention in the first place, but I do not have any data currently to back up this suspicion.

@kora @mrchrisadams @Vivaldi why not both?

(I understand your point. And we indeed can't solve climate change with more efficient websites.

But I don't see too much harm in doing this l
