[#]PennedPossibilities 561. Give us your thoughts on the genre of your WIP. Do you love it, is there not enough stories written within it, are you an avid reader of the genre, etc.?

The genre of my WIP leans into hard SF (with one effectively magical element). I think hard SF is a lot of fun if you use real(ish) sci/tech as part of the story but less so IMO if you make your story about the sci/tech. just my preference.

@orionkidder Given how modular and user modifiable Linux-based distros can be; the Linux Kernel which is the core of all distros does have a lot of hobby potential!

I don't mess around too much myself, however, I will keep abreast of anything newsworthy in FOSS and Linux Spaces. Fedora is the distro I'm currently using and enjoy (mostly due to the Flatpak support right out the gate, and ease of use).

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I'm on Debian, mostly because it's made to work with Gnome, but I'm contemplating shifting to Gnome on top of something else because as much as I appreciate the extreme stability of Debian, it's also really limiting in other ways: you have to manually install Flatpak, you have to manually give yourself permissions on your own computer, etc.

@orionkidder Oh, I know all about Debian! I appreciate that they are so rock solid, but, it's at a cost of being so old. Their packages are so stinky due to age, like a cheese which is out of date!

You do have options, at least when it comes to GNOME on top of something else. I came from Ubuntu (Debian based, but packages are a bit fresher) to Fedora that uses the latest stable version of GNOME. Fresh, rolling release (it's been stable so far with no issues outside its own quirks).

If you need proprietary drivers, there are minimal hoops to jump through...Personally, it took me about 10 minutes to set the proprietary drivers and codecs up!

ZorinOS is Ubuntu-based, but based on my readings on it, it's very user-friendly! The set-up is just as easy as Ubuntu and the interface looks quite nice!

I wouldn't suggest Arch unless you're prepared to work for your installation. It's a very hands-on distro, I'd only recommend it to those who are quite proficient with messing around with Linux.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds I'm hearing a lot of praise for Fedora. What holds me back is the corporate nature of the organization. I'd rather support a democratic non-profit. It's a lot of factors to consider.

That being said, the difference between Gnome 43.9 and Gnome 47 is only a few features and cosmetic improvements, so I don't feel bereft, and it's not hard to install flatpak on Debian, so even though I wish they'd just pre-install it, my apps are up to date.

@orionkidder Mmm, rolling release isn't always necessary unless your hardware is more recent and needs newer kernels for vital support. Staying on Debian would probably be best in your case if you aren't feeling that you are missing out on anything from recent distros. Their stance on security is pretty good too, but can be considered annoying at times, like you referenced in your response to me.

They might be the closest thing you seek in terms of structure, as they don't have a very corporate feel. However, Debian is built with the purpose to serve the needs of all, being made free for anyone interested in using it. Their non-profit supports projects made by people in the FOSS and Open Source space, they feel like the most wholesome of distros.

Sure they have issues like not having a version that allows for default installs for Flathub and Flatpak, but as you said and as I know...The barrier to access is so minimal, it may as well not exist.

@orionkidder Debian did a great job onboarding people with their installer and rock solid distro. Everything works as intended, as it was built for that very purpose. They even made it easy to access all the proprietary stuff that one might need (gamers tend to need non-free drivers for the best performance in games). Apt is one of the best CLI tools that I've worked with when a terminal was necessary.

@orionkidder Yeah, Debian built APT from the ground up! It shows in how smoothly it works for anything Debian-based as well, as a simple and to the point Command Line invoked tool.

Nautilus suffers from a lot of debuffs on Debian, whereas, Ubuntu and Linux Mint buffs it a bit. Nautilus is debuffed for the sake of all that inner stability that Debian has, if it were a bunker in an apocalyptic setting...The Debian Installation would survive!

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Granted, Nautilus is a design philosophy not a mistake, but there's some basic functionality that I do think is missing. It's a matter of where you draw the line at "basic," of course. The good news is, Debian doesn't prevent me from loading up Nemo or Dolphin, which are both pretty damn good.

Funny thing about APT, what pushed me over the edge in favour of switching to Linux was watching someone type, "sudo apt-get..." and the program appeared. It was like magic.
