In the early 1900s, the telegram meant bad news.

“Though the telegram doubtless, always will command a peculiarly important place among methods of communication, the day has passed when mere receipt of a telegram brought heartrending fear of impending catastrophe.”

100 years later the telephone means bad news. If it’s not spam, it means somebody’s hurt, somebody’s in jail, somebody’s dead.
