Can’t believe I’ve only just twigged that Cocoa is named Cocoa in response to Java… The 1999 WWDC is so heavy on Java being the future of development on the Mac, in Cocoa!

@samwho I’m watching on https://youtu.be/OC1H0gHFWio
They start talking about Mac OS X at 1:15:09 and, Jobs starts talking about the three main APIs (Classic, Carbon, and Cocoa) at 1:26:13, and he starts talking explicitly about Cocoa at 1:28:44.
He says: “Mac OS X is going to come with what was formerly called Yellow Box. We’re renaming it to Cocoa. We’re renaming it to Cocoa because in addition to its Objective-C APIs, we’ve added full Java APIs on top of Cocoa”

@rhysmorgan Wikipedia is suggesting that Apple owned the Cocoa name already from a previous project that was a multimedia application for kids, so it feels like it may have been serendipity that this new usage was a funny contrast to Java?

@samwho I wouldn’t be surprised if they already owned the name, but the way Jobs talks about it, he pretty much explicitly says “We named it Cocoa because of Java”

@rhysmorgan ah, reading a bit more that project itself was a reference to Java! Awesome.

@samwho The history of Objective-C and Java, and their intermingling like this, I find it really interesting. Especially since I’ve got retro Macs now!
