Toot

Sooo. I had an old iMac 27" mid-2010 in the basement for like ... IDK. 7 years easily. probably more.

And a refugee friend got his laptop broken and in need for a computer. Doesn't care if it's a laptop or not so ...

I’ve spent my day cleaning this big thing. Physically and digitally.

  1. a good damp cloth to clean the dust and some rust points formed out of humidity.

  1. Isopropyl alcohol + microfiber to clean keyboard, mousse, ports, stickers, all aluminium case

Let's boot it!

Always impressed by an IT thing that is still running like no time passed after 10 years. There's obviously some things that are not existing anymore, like this Google Music intégration which was used to sync my local music to the cloud :'). Sooooo weird. But yes, music was something we had on our devices.

Oh and found out a bunch of CDs too ^^.

The screen "outer glass" was a bit dirty on the inside, and after a quick internet search turn out it's hold with magnets and you can easily remove it. Either with a suction cup of sliding some card between the metal shell and the glass.

Clean the outer glass with window cleaner and the screen with a damp cloth only. no product.

There's a lot of little nob and stuff to help you align and put it back. Don't worry. Super easy!

And thanks to @biou , I might not be limited to Apple original High Sierra mac compatibility :)

Using https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher I can make it work with macOS Ventura without any issues. Could go more newer but with limits that I don't want to impose to a non techie friend.

Just have hard time to create the bootable USB stick :(

My issue now is, copying MacOS RecoveryOS on a usb stick doesn't work. Either with OpenCore Legacy Patcher or the official Apple solution 🤔.

Trying now with a SD Card, because I remember it was a way how it was distributed in the past.

SD Card was a great choice. 32Go seems more manageable for years old installer. Back then > 100 Go usb key wasn't a thing.

So ... Created a custom EFI bootloader for injecting all the compatibility things I need. Wrote on the SD too.

Booted on the SD, custom EFI and then the installer.

See yall in 50min.
