You don’t make yourself and the world better by going into nazi bars and pay drinks to convince people to leave.
You build a better world by actually building and maintaining a friendlier place, making sure it stays open and welcome everyone. It doesn’t need to have a lot of people. It doesn’t need "everybody". It just need to be there with a "welcome" sign on the door.

@ploum We all gotta change what our measure of success is. It's not MAU, it's not value for shareholders, it's not a mega IPO, it's - as you said - about fostering healthy communities. I think the Fediverse has already succeeded 🤗

I do agree with a lot of what you say, and zeroing in on your community/communities does work outside the social networks ... as long as they are local enough?

But what about on-line communities, where people from all over the world have come together?
As people from a community disband from the platform where it formed and join a whole diversity of other platforms, it becomes more challenging to keep that community together, or at least connected.
I've yet to figure out a way to handle that.
