I'm testing the new departures terminal in Vilnius Airport today. This means I get to:

And after enduring all that I get to:

The land-side is amazing now. The old terminal feels like stone age. The security checks area is also very spacious, although I'm sure it will fill up soon (yay, economy 📈).

It will also fill up, because the new security scanners seem smarter. And smart things cause... Eh... Smart problems. E.g. the empty trays need to be fed back one-by-one, and if a helpful passenger stacks them to get the queue moving - someone needs to unstack them manually.

No place to leave the luggage/coat when washing hands.

Baby room looks neat. No children playing area though. Makes sense - flying is for childless white men.

Grand prize 🎉

The new air-side feels cramped (I guess things will feel differently once it's all connected up), but overall - it's more pleasant than the old departures area.

@dominykas playing areas are mostly built by airlines (think lufthansa), but our airlines are poor.

@ly2en maybe. Not sure. All modern airports have them, and some of them are actually quite amazing.

But the new terminal airside is also pretty cramped, TBH, and they haven't even fitted out shopping/restaurants yet, so I don't see where a play area might even fit. Maybe in the old terminal.

@dominykas isn't that, statistically speaking, you either fly frequently or you fly with kids?

@ly2en do you have kids? Have you flown with them? Have you been through a rubbish airport (Kaunas, Vilnius) with them? Have you been through a great airport (Madrid, Copenhagen) with them? Even Warsaw has a play area.

@ly2en I would imagine the frequent fliers appreciate my kids having spent time in a play area before we all board a sealed tube.

@dominykas yes I have kids. yes I fly with kids. yes I have high tolerances for rubbish airports. I go to the business lounge and I don't care much, unless it's a rush hour and all lounges are full (happens in Zurich, Vienna, etc.). I have flown so much in recent years that I have stopped giving a fuck about the airport quality.

@ly2en yeah, so exactly that - it matters the most for the people who make 1-2 trips/year, probably on a charter flight. Like, the most of them. And it's the small details that make these trips easier. And the play areas make a huge difference, esp. on longer layovers.

You can ryanair the shit out of everything in life, for sure. But you don't have to. Vilnius is not a hub, but it does not have to be a shithole either.

Oh, btw, how do business travelers like the kids in lounges?

@ly2en like, there's a smoking area in the new terminal. Which is totally more important and better business than a play room.

But hey, I agree - women and children chose to be that way, and need to be punished for that. It's not our job to help them enjoy life. What made them think they should travel in comfort, or at all, for that matter. And a little hardship is good for training the character anyways.

@dominykas exactly, it's business talking. Flying in comfort died around the 1980's and it is about time to accept it. Here is a nice picture to remind us of those good ol' times.

@ly2en this ignores the fact that airports are public infrastructure (at least in Lithuania). A publicaly owned public good.

@dominykas public infrastructure that is paid by the airlines, not you. You just buy the ticket.

@ly2en pretty sure travelers pay more in tickets than airlines in infrastructure. Let alone the "airport fees" that you pay when purchasing the ticket. Yeah, no, the airlines only collect the money. The public pays.

Need to check how much funding the airports get from the budget 🤔 but there's subsidized flights for sure, so there's that. I love it when taxpayers fund my flights to London City. Which, on the subject, is a great airport. Only crossed it once with a kid tho...
