Given Meta’s recent hateful conduct policy change, specifically regarding now allowing calling specifically LGBTQ+ various flavors of ‘mentally ill’, I’ve decided to go ahead and defederate with threads.net.

Honestly should’ve done that a long time ago considering how little regard they have for data privacy, but I didn’t want to risk severing any connections as I’m not the only user of this server.

Since nobody here even follows users on Threads to begin with, eat shit Zuck.

@forgifuzzbutt I figured Threads would block us anyway so I yeeted them the moment they announced their plans to federate. :ameowdab: Fuck you Zuck.

And also it turned out I was right since they defederated from basically every queer instance the moment they had a single post come their way. I don't really understand why they bothered coding in federation if they're just going to block the entire Fediverse anyway.

@Rusty Mine is small enough to slip under the radar (otherwise it prolly would’ve got nixed for not having a clear written moderation policy), so I’d occasionally see a few posts pop up on my timeline.

But seeing him (and basically everyone else in Silicon Valley) bend to dictator trump and rolling back policies meant to protect minorities is really rubbing me the wrong way and my patience for that shit has pretty much hit zero now.

@forgifuzzbutt It really does feel like the era of power consolidation, and having people with massive influence over the economy bend the knee is really scary. It's 100% how dictatorships operate, and Silicon Valley is all too happy to oblige. :drgn_sigh:

@forgifuzzbutt @Rusty since bsky is “decentralized” (aka actually centralized), its only a matter of time til they’re next…. We never federated w/ threads in the first place :angypancake:

@bluefops @forgifuzzbutt I don't think BlueSky is going to be next unless the private equity firms that are funding it wrest control away from the current team working on it. Like yeah, probably down the road BlueSky will enshittify, but the current team has a pretty good head on their shoulders and seems interested in cultivating the current community. They were enough to piss Jack Dorsey right the fuck off into going to the crypto bro hell that is Nostr, so. At least in the immediate future, I'm optimistic BlueSky's culture will be alright.

That said, BlueSky can still suck an egg for being pretend-decentralized. :neodog_what:

@Rusty @forgifuzzbutt safe for now but keep an eye out, just like how meta made a sudden hard right turn so can these people. Easier for a private company to pivot after all.

@bluefops @forgifuzzbutt It's possible, but unlike Twitter or Meta that were built on the exploitation of labor and treating their users as commodities, BlueSky is built by a team of people and the FOSS community with a goal of a subscription service to help cover costs instead of data collection. The culture seems fundamentally different. Like yeah everything centralized has the potential to enshittify and people should avoid using centralized services as a result, plus BlueSky is such a firehose of freely accessible content that large scale data collection is going to become a reality very quickly, but I think there's important cultural context that's worth considering here with the people behind BlueSky.

My bigger concern is Telegram at the moment. They've had some pretty ugly dog whistles recently and their connections with some of the... fascier elements of eastern Europe is very troubling. Plus I don't trust MTProto even slightly and think it's long past time for furries to move to an encrypted messaging service.
