I don't know about the 991A but my FT-897D (which is the 857 in a bigger enclosure) and my 817ND are terrible in AM (which it seems to be a known issue on those transceivers).
I gave up using them in AM a long time ago.
Have you made any modification or specific tuning to make the 857 sound good on AM?

@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio It is pretty cool! We do the AM net on Wednesdays, and then a 2 meter sideband net on Saturdays.
