@idlestate reminds me a bit of when there was a recession here around 2008 and a lot of young men started riding bicycles rather than driving cars - but many were thoroughly miserable about it, they rode aggressively and often intimidated women/kids on bikes and pedestrians on shared paths, and many got back into cars as soon as the economy picked up again (and drove them badly too, in spite of their time spent cycling)

Oof. There's a sort of paradox here. The least unsafe way for these folks to get around is transit. But we don't want them making that any more unpleasant for everyone else, either.

@idlestate this is in a provincial town surrounded by outer suburbs and rural areas - we do have some buses, but outside town they are sporadic and if your destinations aren't directly on the route you have to wait around at the bus station in town for 10-20 mins. So cycling can be a good way of getting around over here..
