Thinking about finally migrating off of mastodon.social with the whole Meta federation thing, but I’m noticing most of the tech/gamedev-focussed instances are still federated with Threads too.

Any tips on a nice, left-leaning tech/gamedev instance with sensible moderation?

(Also I’m happy to throw a few bucks towards the upkeep of whatever instance I land on)

@swiftcoder You might want to be more specific about what you mean by "sensible moderation". That would help folks narrow down the options to better suit you.

@kristinHenry not going to complain if I post pictures of my cat or other non-tech stuff. I admittedly haven’t been keeping up lately, but some of the early tech instances were not keen on off-topic content

@swiftcoder hmm...on my instance, we ask that folks stay on-topic for fully public posts, but not on 'quiet-public' posts.

Maybe there are gamedev instances with a similar policy?

@swiftcoder personally, I find that my 'quiet public' posts often end up a lot more popular than my on-topic public posts.

@swiftcoder what about a non-topic based instance, but more location based?

If you were in the San Francisco Bay Area, I'd suggest the sfba.social.

@kristinHenry I live in northwest Spain these days, so unfortunately my geographical groups are mostly in Gallego/Portuguese.

An EU-based instance would certainly be good, provided they don’t mind that I am mostly Anglophone (I can speak Spanish, some French, some German, but none well enough I want do day-to-day tech stuff in)

@kristinHenry showing my lack of familiarity with the lingo here, but I take it “quiet public” is more or less the thing the mastodon app calls “unlisted”?

@swiftcoder ah, yes, "quiet public' is the same as 'unlisted', and it's called that in the web client.

@kristinHenry (and I assume this was implicit in my original post, but willing to yeet Threads)

@swiftcoder Oh! It just occurred to me, that you might find some good leads from @FediGarden resources
