The president just got finished saying that African countries should be thanking them for the colonialism, they still owe Haiti reparations, fuck that country, to hell.

I've wondered what is it about France that is (or was) attractive to certain famous Black Americans of note. I mean, sure, #1 is that isn't the USofA but so are a lot of places.

France's history in Africa and the Caribbean? Not so great. Better than here by a lot but that's a low bar.

I remember Nina Simone said she could breathe there. James Baldwin said much the same.

@orange_lux @ohmu yeah, very different time and context, the biggest one being that formal apartheid/Jim Crow was a thing in the U.S. during that time in a way it's not now.
