I've wondered what is it about France that is (or was) attractive to certain famous Black Americans of note. I mean, sure, #1 is that isn't the USofA but so are a lot of places.
France's history in Africa and the Caribbean? Not so great. Better than here by a lot but that's a low bar.
I remember Nina Simone said she could breathe there. James Baldwin said much the same.
