Too bad there isn't a better version of Death Note. Like what a fun show but you go in for a rewatch like "woooow I forgot how cringe 2006 was". A lot of shows around this time kinda feel like an old Hot Topic coughed them up, and it wasn't just an anime thing. 😂
Mostly still one of my favorites from back in the day though, cringe and all.

@rybson This article makes me happy that when I first saw deathnote it was well past the anime release and people were already meeting it halfway with reinterpretation when they showed it to me, cause if I had taken it as seriously as it apparently took itself back in the day I don't think I'd have enjoyed it as much. 😂

@trashcaster I actually was reading the manga as it was releasing, and was buying it in polish as soon as it was available. It was quite the hype to go buy it with fellow weebs. But the fandom was quite toxic (are'nt they all?) I went to a convention once dressed in standard gothic kawaii clothing, and was booed that I am cosplaying Misa, how dare I to be so unoriginal! (I was not cosplaying)
So yeah, watching it later, from a distance, with reinterpretation, is quite a good thing :D
Funnily enough I might have never seen the Death note anime in its entirety, and only watched fragments.

@rybson Ugh, I missed a lot of the IRL interactions around anime growing up, school clubs, conventions, etc, and I'm glad that it helped a lot of marginalized kids find some community, but from most of what I hear I dodged a bullet or two. 🙃
Sorry you caught shit for dumb reasons. Even if you had been cosplaying, anybody without something nice to stay could have easily shut their face. 🕳️
I bet the manga has more time to be problematic than the show does, would be an interesting read sometime. I don't think the whole aside about gay people is in the anime, for instance. It is so jarring when a writer tries to use a character as a megaphone like that in the middle of their story. Not subtle.

@trashcaster yeah you did sort of dodge a bullet :D
Yeah, honestly, the best part about the manga to me was always the art style, and the clothing designs. Everything else? bah, who cares.
And also the scene where Light is eating crisps. Idk, it just stuck with me.
The writing was always... heavy handed, to put it mildly. Even child/teenage me noticed that :D
