Whelp, it happened again.
On the way home last night, my moto will only shift up, not down. This is almost certainly the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THC-C_KAe6E
Looking back at my maintenance history, I get about 5000 miles or 1.5 years on a bike before this happens. It has happened FOUR times now, on two different bikes. I used to think I was cursed, but now I'm reasonably sure it's a design flaw.

I haven't had the best luck with bikes lately, mind you.
2012 Royal Enfield: died in 2017, piston exploded
2017 Triumph T120: shifter broke twice within a year (warranty covered the first one, then I traded it in)
2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200: got to ~6k miles with zero issues, then STOLEN.
2014 Tiger 800: zero issues, but STOLEN two weeks later!
2021 Triumph Scrambler 1200 again: broken shifter at 4200 miles, and again at 9500 miles.
Thinking of going electric. They don't have shifters.
