documenting my MacBook setup procedure, I accidentally-yet-inevitably emitted a series of minor rants: https://prepitaph.org/journal/mbp-2025-01-04/

@FND Thanks for writing it down 👍 “Nevertheless, a few years ago one indispensable macOS-only application forced its way through my defenses” are you talking about iTerm2? 🤔 Would also be interested in the Brewfile 😀

@moonglum yay, somebody took the bait!¹

I'm definitely not talking about iTerm2: that's more nuisance than indispensable² (I originally chose it for the drop-down console and because typography - or font rendering? I ain't doing anything fancy there, as you know - seemed much better)

said app is basically just a ledger thing (not the 🧱 ⛓️ kind!), though what makes it valuable is integration with a bunch of other systems...

I've never looked into the Hackintosh thing, but I'm kinda hoping some VM might work if/when it's time to liberate myself...

¹ https://prepitaph.org/articles/bugs-are-good/

² appears to have succumbed to feature creep, which is problematic not merely in terms of attack surface, but also just a pita to configure

@moonglum congratulations, you've identified FND's Achilles heel fatality.gif

I've been flailing ever since GReader was killed, as no alternative ever seemed adequate - that leaves me reluctantly using Thunderbird for barely a handful of feeds, @birb for a few others and otherwise mostly not using feeds anymore 😔

@FND I’m sorry 😅 Personally, I use a self-hosted FreshRSS with “Reader Classic” on iOS and NewsFlash on Linux (there are tons of compatible clients, all syncing their read status, including things like newsboat.org). This is the best RSS reading setup I ever had.

@moonglum that sounds like a lot... 😮‍💨 perhaps I'm just ready to succumb to @keenan'-induced anxiety https://gkeenan.co/avgb/rss-readers-make-me-want-to-jump-into-a-vat-of-acid/
