Toot

I've installed #NixOS on my daily driver, and I'm really loving it so far. The most pleasing thing is that you can't fuck it up. With Debian I'd try a hundred things to get my GPU working, and then I'd worry that the ninety nine bad attempts had left my system in a weird state. With NixOS the entire state of the system is defined from a single file, so once you've found the right config then the system will always be correct! And finding the right config was actually easier too.

@OscarCunningham I used to use Arch and would occasionally ‘turn my PC into a vegetable’ (as my father would say) prompting a reinstall (long job) to get back to sensible. Switching to NixOS, I found the ability to roll back to working configurations in these situations life changing.

@antidote I haven't yet managed to vegetise my computer entirely, but I look forward to being able to not panic when it happens. I imagine it will also be very easy to migrate to a new machine.

@OscarCunningham I'm about 150 generations in after 2 years and it is mostly good. Contrary to popular belief it is possible to mess things up, stay away from /nix/store with sudo.

@OscarCunningham That is a pretty accurate reflection of my #NixOS experience 🙂

Whenever I am looking back, I am so much impressed how stable my systems are, even over a period of many years.

I am very grateful for the community and the contributors enabling such an ecosystem, which is an incredible boost for my productivity 🙏

@OscarCunningham

Have you ever tried Guix? How do they compare?

@railmeat I haven't tried it. I tend to stick to popular distros so that it's easier to get support. Safety in numbers.

@OscarCunningham I also really enjoyed working with different combinations of settings, driver versions, desktop environments,... to get my NVIDIA GPU working under NixOS. That's really much easier than on other operating systems!

@OscarCunningham Six years in I don't remember when last I made a large modification to any of my desktop installs.

Probably the last time I made any was the last NixOS version bump and/or switching to Plasma 6.

Excellently boring - allowing me to focus on actually productive and/or fun tasks.
