How many use cases now remain where green #Hydrogen is the best fit? Batteries keep edging it out as costs plummet and energy density shoots up. Trains, trucks and automobiles all look like batteries are best. Same for short to medium range shipping and probably same for short to medium flight? Moving power around will probably end up via HVDC (especially with superconductors coming along).

Some industrial processes? Iron, fertiliser?

Still a candidate for seasonal load shifting?

@Tallish_Tom Hydrogen is hard/expensive to store and to move. As sodium batteries become available, the cost of battery storage is likely to fall by a lot -- probably an order of magnitude. Yes, it isn't really effective for inter-seasonal storage but I'd guess that neither is hydrogen because of storage costs/leakage, and that thermal or pumped storage will be the long term solutions to that.

@Tallish_Tom I also really don't think aviation has a future. Regardless of the form of energy, I think we are going to have to cut energy usage overall, both because of cost and because of environmental heating, and aviation is just ludicrously profligate.

@simon_brooke

Maybe, but short/medium haul, on fully electric planes might and up with quite a small footprint.

OTOH I think I am further over on the techno-optimist scale from you 🙂

@Tallish_Tom Substantially, I think. Still, it's pleasant to be able to imagine that the light at the end of the tunnel might not be a Train à Grande Vitesse.
