How many of you folks have personally changed a tire on your car? Do I need to teach my niece to change a tire or depend on AAA as I do?

@hdunagan Teacher her to how to change a tire. AAA is not always available.

She should learn how to check the oil and coolant levels, too. Knowing how to add oil and coolant is good, too.

Also, fuses. Where they are and how to check them.

(Yes, I have.)

So ends my automotive TED talk...

@Jason844 My newer car takes synthetic oil, and I don't seem to need to check it often. And I'm told I don't need to change it except once a year. I find this VERY odd, hard to get used to. Is this what I teach the kid? Should I look for an older car to talk about how traditional oil works?

@hdunagan @Jason844 My understanding is that synthetic oil it has more to do with how many miles you've driven, rather than the time in between oil changes. I still do it every six months or so, but I unfortunately also drive my car more than most people

@Jason844 @hdunagan @DelilahTech Seconding the importance of teaching young women how to do these things, rather than being dependent on others.

(I wish someone had taught me.)

@hdunagan I've done it enough times that I've lost count, but it kinda depends on what quality roads you drive, and if you keep your tires in good shape / rotated etc.

At least around where I live, AAA usually takes longer than popping on a spare... and that's assuming I'm within cell reception. Usually I'd rather just put on the spare. I think it's a valuable skill for anyone driving a car, but especially for a young woman.
