Reminder, if you're working in an office building there's likely a place(usually in the basement) to throw out old electronics, go have a look every now and then, you'll find some gold. Today I got these M73 Tiny's. They work, they just need some TLC, and then I'll try my hand at getting them to run Windows XP, as I'm quite curious how well the Haswell iGPU works, now that I've found drivers for it.

Well cleaned them up, gave the fans a bit of oil, they both got bearable to listen to, and I managed to try out XP on one of them. 19k in 01SE isn't super impressive, we're in high end for 2003 territory, and that's with a much faster CPU than what you could get back then, but I'm still optimistic, as this was with a Pentium G3220T, I've ordered some I3's that has twice the shaders, can't wait

I can explain!

So I saw someone selling two M93p's online completely barebone, after some haggling I got them, and then I did a lot of research and testing, the i3's I ordered was a mistake not only did I order the wrong one, the non-T variant, the M73 wouldn't even boot with them and the M93p would but would run kinda wonkily, I also discovered Intel has a Hawell refresh that doesn't work with XP, and both the t and non-t variant is from that refresh line🧡

So I found out the i5-4570t is like THE processor for this job, and what job is that? smallest XP gaming PC and enough for a mini-LAN between friends.

So how well did the i5 do with twice the shaders? It's complicated.. in benchmarks it got a mild boost of around 25-30%, however if I test it in Windows 7 it seems to do a lot better, so it's likely the driver isn't fully baked for benchmarks at least. Still it puts it at a pretty high-end 2005-2006 PC while taking up no space and sipping power.

Regards to the LAN aspect, I've set it up so one PC runs an ad-hoc wifi network, and the others are pre-configured to connect to it with static IP's, and yeah it works great! I've also included a script that allows you to change between Static and DHCP on the physical connection, in case you want to use that instead. IPX also worked fine after installing the protocol.
