Toot

Finally caught up to the 30% complete I was at when I last attempted Metroid Prime 2 on the Wii several years ago. I started over because I forgot everything that had happened.

I'm now wondering if I rage quit: There's a poorly designed section where you have to do a long puzzle section and then fight a stupid-hard boss without saving first. This time I beat it on my second try, but while on my last energy tank!

I really think this boss is poorly designed. First of all, you're underwater, which means worse mobility and visibility - but you're supposed to keep your distance from and dodge the boss.

Second, the boss is only vulnerable while charging if it decides to open its mouth, which it is much harder to goad into doing when its health gets low - you have to get as far away as possible and pray.

You're also supposed to somehow dodge, but I just tanked its ramming attacks.

Once I defeated that boss, I quickly ran into another: A giant version of one of my least favorite enemies, which are only vulnerable to backstabs. Fortunately it was in the dark world, so I could just kite it and stand in light bubbles to heal. It was tedious as hell though, and then again much harder near the end - it stopped getting stuck while grappling, giving me only a split second to get around behind and shoot it with missiles.

My reward was the grapple beam power up.

Now I'm stuck though, and will have to consult a walkthrough. For some reason, the game is telling me I need to go to an area that I think is behind a locked door that can only be opened with Power Bomb, which I don't have.

I got another hint to look for a visor, but without a location.

Finally, it showed me where in the dark world to find the second of 3 keys I'm looking for, but there's no obvious way to reach it.

It really seems like the middle third of MP2: Echoes has some design flaws.

The idea of splitting off a "dark world" version of the main game world is interesting and fairly well done. It's not original - I can think of multiple horror games/films/shows that have done this, and I don't even like that genre much.

It makes the nonlinear exploration part of this metroidvania borderline aggravating, however, as you have to figure out how to weave between worlds on top of all the usual kinds of progress gating. I keep banging my head on locked areas until I get a hint.

Also, while I like that the game rewards exploration by throwing power-ups at you (energy tanks and missile expansions mostly) when you revisit old areas after gaining new abilities, I really wish the map would give you hints as to where stuff is.

I say this because it's really easy to miss stuff - sometimes it's just tucked under a floor, for example, where you're unlikely to spot it unless you happen to navigate in ball mode and go a little too far.

Maybe it picks up later in the game, but up to this point the number of times I've felt like a badass for figuring out a side puzzle has been small enough that it's not enough of an incentive to explore; instead, my main motivation is simply having more endurance for tedious boss fights.

I'm excited to see if they improved things in Metroid Prime 3, but I'll probably be too burned out to tackle it for a while even if I ever do manage to complete MP2.

@HunterZ I struggled through it anyway, as usual, but I hated Metroid Prime 2.
