H1B immigration status is tied to your employer it’s insanely exploitative. This is also why America healthcare is tied to employment.

@Leeisme Yup, I helped a former co-worker on an H1B visa get a new job at a rate that was 2x what he had been paid. When he started the new job, the intermediary company that held his visa took 100% of the increase I had negotiated, and paid him the same rate.

I was furious. When I contacted the company that held his visa, they told me F-Off (in not so many words). When I called the client I’d negotiated with, they said it was too late, the contracts were already in place.
