A year ago today I spent my last Christmas with my whole family. We didn't know that it was going to be our mom's last Christmas or that my dad would be going into a nursing home 2 months later. I don't remember a lot about it but I want it back. I will remember this Christmas - the first one without her. The first one where my dad can't stay the whole day. The first one where we figure out exactly how our family works now. I am thankful for what I do have and that I have the ability to sign my dad out of the home and the ability to move him from the car to the wheelchair, etc. I know mom would be happy about all of this as well and want us to move on. We are all doing our best.
There are many others out there who are spending their first holiday without a parent, spouse, sibling, or child today. To them I want to say I'm with you and I feel your pain. To everyone else, be there for them. They are also trying to be happy even though they hurt like hell.

The most important thing that everyone needs to hear right now is that you should treasure every moment together. Don't let politics or any other disagreements keep you away from your loved ones because you don't know when they won't be there. Your life can change in a moment - don't have regrets about things you meant to do or wish you would have done.

[big hug]
Lost my brother a few weeks ago. I don't have any Hallmark Card platitudes, for grief can't be shared, not really.
If your Dad's in a chair, it may be easier to get non-emergency transport for your Dad. They have the vans set up for just such missions.
We live on in those who loved us.
