We all know the trope.

Someone fires their pistol at someone/thing and they/it keeps coming.

Eventually the shooter runs out of bullets, and just throws the empty gun.

Has there even been a movie where this has actually helped?

There is also the running gag of "How do you hit someone with a Mac-10? Throw it at them," that particular machine pistol being infamously inaccurate.
