It's 12/21/24 & I still think a lot of people of all ages are importantly giving up on reading signage, notices, & other important information because they've attenuated to a nightmare world where 90% of the shit they're asked to look at, listen to, & read on a daily basis is ads.

Driving, shopping in person, shopping online, reading online, cable TV, watching streamed media, listening to music online, listening to radio, using a Windows computer, walking around a town square...

All the most normal things most normal people do subjects them to relentless advertising. What's insane is that this only really benefits a handful of companies. It's not like expanding the advertising space to include every fucking thing you do is increasing the number of small businesses.

It's mostly the same fucking 20 companies who are already ruinning everything else we love & rely on, who want to make sure you fucking know that there's a new M&M for you to try or a new twist on the same fuckin shit McDonalds has always been selling. It's so the local car dealership can be even more of a nuisance & public health threat, selling murder boxes & then distracting people while they operate those murder boxes.

And now advertising is considered such a sacred right that normal people, everyday users, are constantly coerced into giving away personal data, including location, device usage, biometrics, & a million other metrics, supposedly so that companies can sell ads better than ever. "You want this, trust me. Wouldn't you rather see ~relevant ads~ than irrelevant ones? No, put that ad blocker down. Please, I'm begging you, this violates the terms of service, that's right YOU'RE the violator, not me."

So pple accept that they need to let their kids play a video game sometimes, they need a bank app, they need to read news, so they just say "ok." They turn off their brain for this unending, repetitive task so they can focus on literally anything else, maybe they're savvy enough to click "manage settings" on the cookie popup but thats it. They don't read ad banners, they tune out Spotify ads, if they're spiteful they may even look away during video ads. Anything to take back a little control.

& so they also don't read warning signs, they don't read bathroom signage, they don't read menu signage, they don't reliably read traffic signage, they throw away most of their mail, they ignore most of the calls on their phone, they miss out on public service announcements....

So the advertising continues to be more aggressive, more intrusive, and harder to avoid, to reach all the people to are checking out harder and harder to avoid fucking ads.

Oh you've got an ad blocker that blocks YouTube ads? Well enjoy this message from the sponsor for today's video, Squarespace/NordVPN/Hello Fresh/etc, who has paid primo money right to the content creator to drop a fuckin ad right into the actual video which must be manually skipped thru.

It's literally goddamn POLLUTION. It is POLLUTION for the psyche, for our senses, for our information spaces.

People abandoned cable TV for streaming to fucking get away from this shit and they still follow us around with it, poisoning the new media just like the old one or even worse. This is not sustainable.
