Security lapses, nation state espionage, cyberattacks, global outages, bans on consumer messaging apps...

2024 has highlighted the need for a new era of interoperable, decentralised communications protected by end-to-end encryption.

@element This should also be an important reminder to everyone that Element does, first and foremost, focuses at and caters to the needs of governments and corpos.

If we (as the public) want to have at least a proper #Matrix Client with UI/UX and a feature set that can rival Discord, that definitely won't be Element.

@Natanox yup, right now Element is funding our Matrix development by selling to governments, given they are the main folks who are willing to put serious money behind encrypted collaboration. However, we're building Element X with general-purpose messaging in mind (like iMessage, Signal, WhatsApp), as should be obvious from using it :)

@element "like iMessage, Signal, WhatsApp" isn't what I meant. πŸ˜‰ Discord-style Messengers are a whole different beast, and right now it basically got a monopoly. Also Element X seems to be mobile-first in design.

@Natanox yup. Element X very consciously goes after iMessage/Signal/WhatsApp at first, although as a protocol Matrix obviously supports collaboration too, and Element Web/Desktop is more generalist. The idea is to make both more collaboration-centric in future though; both to benefit the public Matrix network (i.e. folks who want a Discord replacement) and because the features which make Discord great are just as useful for govt/corp users too. But WA-replacement comes first.
