it's annoying me, probably more than it should mind you, that the SensePlayer can't use third party Android TTS engines.

What annoys me so much about this is that the BrailleSense Six doesn't have this limitation.

@masonasons If it makes you feel any better, I'm so annoyed about it that I haven't bought the thing just for that reason. I would have if that reason didn't exist.

@techsinger valid. I do use it right now mostly for audio.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from masonasons@fwoof.space
@masonasons I wouldn't want it for audio, I don't do audio, but I would be dancing in the streets to have a non-phone device running android with buttons. If it were a normal Android device, if it could run TTS like a normal Android device, their sales would have gone up by at least one, Whether they would give a damn is, of course, another thing.

@techsinger Yeah. I do want a fully functional android with buttons. That would be quite awesome.

@masonasons Smartvision? I got one used, and it does work. Navigation with keyboard and keypad is crap, though, and it's definitely not worth the retail price.

@techsinger @masonasons I wish Unihertz would update this phone, but this one has a physical keyboard: https://www.unihertz.com/products/titan-slim?pr_prod_strat=e5_desc&pr_rec_id=6b660c7a5&pr_rec_pid=7691081318639&pr_ref_pid=6948278468798&pr_seq=uniform

@mcourcel @techsinger Anyone know which version of android it uses?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from masonasons@fwoof.space
@mcourcel @techsinger Android 11.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from masonasons@fwoof.space
@masonasons @techsinger That one is Android 11. That's why I wish they would update it. But with all Unihertz phones, you can put whatever you want on them.

@mcourcel @masonasons @techsinger Unihertz have announced they'll be coming out with a new qwerty phone sometime soon. I would hold off.

@simon @mcourcel @masonasons I appreciate your letting us know, I hadn't heard that before.

@techsinger @mcourcel @masonasons I follow r/unihertz and lots of people love those Titan phones. I regularly see commenters talking about having all three. I would definitely be curious to pick up a newer phone by them. But also the novelty of buying weird phones is starting to feel less important than the fact that all of those weird phones get 0 Android updates.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from simon@procrastodon.net
@simon @techsinger @mcourcel Yeah, I think they just expect you to update them manually.

@simon @techsinger @mcourcel I personally don't care about being on the latest latest android, that doesn't matter as much as being on the latest iOS.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from masonasons@fwoof.space
@masonasons @techsinger @mcourcel Agreed. As long as it's within the last few major versions, I don't care. But it does start to matter eventually, for various reasons. And they don't even release security updates. They give 0 fucks about keeping their phones secure after they're sold. People are starting to make a lot more noise about that--every time Unihertz makes an announcement they get slammed with comments from people telling them they need to start releasing software updates. But so far, they're not budging.

@simon @techsinger @mcourcel Oh damn, OK um, they should at least be keeping up with security updates. Wow nevermind then

@simon @techsinger @masonasons Well, Unihertz did push out an update for their Max just recently. I have yet to see how frequent that will be though.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from mcourcel@mstdn.ca
@mcourcel @techsinger @masonasons That was mostly to fix serious problems with the original software. They did that to avoid a massive influx of refunds. It's not uncommon to have one or two updates shortly after initial release, but even six months in, forget it.

@simon @techsinger @masonasons I agree, but I still like the hardware. Are you getting this info from RedIt or Facebook? I wouldn't mind getting to know more. Did you ever find your Jelly Star by the way?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from mcourcel@mstdn.ca
@mcourcel @techsinger @masonasons I did not, sadly. I get most of my info from Reddit, though I did recently join all the Unihertz groups for the phones I have.
Still not sure if I"ll buy another one. The S10E is a pretty good media player.

@simon @mcourcel @techsinger What do you like about the S10E?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from masonasons@fwoof.space
@masonasons @mcourcel @techsinger It's about the size of an iPhone 6S, runs really well, has a headphone jack and SD card slot, has 55% more battery than the jelly star. Very little microphone leakage, and really good stereo spekaers and microphones. I dislike the Samsung OS and having to choose between crashy talkback and ancient talkback. I am thinking of installing something custom on it.

@simon @mcourcel @techsinger Oh wow. Uh. That sounds quite awesome.

@simon @mcourcel @masonasons If I may ask, have you seen anyone install any of the available systems, like Graphene, on these phones? If it weren't for accessibility, I'd buy something with one of the more supported Linux versions and have done with it, but I've never seen one with even basic access.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from techsinger@tweesecake.social
@techsinger @mcourcel @masonasons I've seen people install regular Android on these phones, and then figure out how to modify it. I think @fireborn did this.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from simon@procrastodon.net
@simon @mcourcel @masonasons @fireborn Hmmm. Interesting.

@simon @mcourcel @masonasons Yes, this is the problem, and it's not just Unihertz. Frankly, I'm to the point where I buy it for what it is now, not for any upddates, they aren't on the way.

@techsinger @mcourcel @masonasons Oh I've always been at that point. I'm still sick of it though.
