Okay mastodon - I've heard you're an expert in this. I have a desktop computer that I built a couple of years ago that's been running Windows 10.

I'd love to make the switch to Linux - I used a version of Ubuntu throughout Uni and have played around on remote Linux servers since, but haven't used it as my main system for 10 years (and I still have to use Windows 11 on my work laptop).

All I really use my computer for is gaming, discord, programming and video editing. I've backed up my files and Steam saves.

My questions:

• Is it worth dual booting or can I get away with getting rid of Windows for good nowadays?

• I'm currently looking at Pop!_OS, anything I should look out for?

You're getting lots of other good suggestions here. Your mileage is going to vary of course. I use Linux mint Debian edition exclusively these days.

I have a desktop that I do boot into windows, and a laptop that I have exclusively set aside for windows. Because there are times when I need it

Like for updating my GPS unit...

If you can afford a nice SSD drive, pull that Windows drive out and put Linux on the other one.

@mstheasaurus I still dual-boot with Windows because there's some Windows-only software that's just more refined than any Linux equivalent. Your video editing suite might be that for you.

If you are thinking of wiping away Windows completely, though, maybe you get a good quality USB stick (64GB, USB 3.0) and create a Windows recovery drive? That way if a year from now you wish you still had Windows, you can at least restore your old install :)

@ameel Good idea. I was previously using the Adobe Suite because I had to teach with it, but I can't stand how buggy it is so I'm looking to change software anyway. A couple of my students suggested DaVinci which has a Linux version so hopefully that'll be fine for my meagre needs.
