@kelpana looks like it's possible to buy sheet material to replace them, but finding the right stuff at non obnoxious prices is frustrating. Seems to be PTFE Teflon self adhesive sheet, or some non-brand "high molecular weight" alternative.

Glides on my mouse are now ruined, though it's still smooth enough.
