Claire Lew of Canopy [originally was “Know Your Team”] daily tip for Friday, December 13th was “They already know,” pointing out that managers / leaders often make the [very human] assumption that their subordinates know everything that they know. But the nature of typical corporate hierarchy pushes information and decisions “up” to the bosses, and restricts communication “down” to the people doing the work.

The tip for leaders is to keep in mind that “they” (the workers) do NOT already know everything that was conveyed to you in management level meetings.

My personal experience has been with a number of bosses who not only make the [common human] assumption that others know everything that they know, but that when I or others report that we were not informed, the boss says, …

“Well if you don't know, then it's your responsibility to ask!”

I find that abusive.

I expect “managers” to do the work of management — including communication. And “delegation” requires that the person delegating the work do their part.
